History

Drayton Valley Curling Club
1957 - 2024
By Bruce Clemmer

How It All Started
The first curling rock on the ice, thrown in 1957

During the Spring of 1957, a group of Curling people join forces to build a plan to build a curling rink. Former Brier Canadian Curling Champion Billy Rose (1946) is part of the group.

In the fall of 1957 they sell debentures $200.00 each to help raise funds for construction. Extra donations came in and by Christmas we were curling. In 1962 Men’s and Ladies leagues were formed and schools were getting into the action. Fire in the lounge resulted in damage and a cinder block addition was added.

Our weekend bonspiels were so popular that with 64 teams on five sheets meant curling started Wednesday nights and went to 2 am each night! One of our big bonspiels is the Pembina Oilmen’s – it was a big draw for our town, local and other Alberta Business support helped grow our place as the place to be.

"The Wind Chill Factor"
as stated by CJCA Ched Morning Man Wes Montgomery

In 1982 our old barn was showing its age and getting a little cold. The fundraising began and a new location at the Omniplex was decided. On October 10, 1991 we were in our new facility.

Looking Back

For the last 33 years I am immensely proud to say the club has hosted many word class events: AB provincial BP Cup, AB Provincial Scotties playdowns, AB Provincial Men’s playdowns, World Curling Tour 2003, 2004 & 2005, many junior and senior playdowns, and most recently the U20 Provincial Championships.

The DVCC has been host to community fundraisers like the Zorn Memorial Bonspiel raising money for the Make A Wish Foundation, and the annual Pembina Oilmen’s which contributes to the community every year.

I am so proud of the efforts of so many volunteers of Drayton Valley and the members of the DVCC. As a member of DV Curling Club for over 25 years it is a job well done by so many.
